Foundations for Success in the AAN

Event Time: Saturday May 4, 2019 7:00 am to 2:30 pm
Topic(s): Leadership
Director(s): Terrence Cascino MD, FAAN
Description: The current state of healthcare is extremely complex with many challenges and barriers for physicians and our patients.  This landscape is rapidly evolving, and physicians are often not driving the major decisions that impact our career field and ability to provide care. Neurologists have faced repeated threats to compensation, arbitrary impediments to obtaining diagnostic tests, and soaring drug prices.  We have some of the highest rates of burnout, and many within our field experience significant inequities in pay and career progression. These challenges make clear the need for visionary and effective physician leaders.  Despite this, most physicians receive little to no formal leadership development training.  The AAN Leadership Programs provide an opportunity for neurologists to develop the necessary skills to lead within our organization, our field, and beyond.  The Foundations for Success is intended to provide in-depth and interactive leadership development experience focused on four topics that are relevant to leaders in almost any setting or circumstance.
Completion Message: Participants will have a greater understanding of fundamental principles of leadership and will be able to apply this knowledge in any situation in which they have the opportunity or responsibility to lead.  Specifically, participants will be prepared to: Understand and utilize adaptive leadership Navigate conflict in the professional setting Recognize the impact of conscious and unconscious bias Better advocate on behalf of the field of neurology and our patients
