Description: | The concept of 3-dimensional (3D) phenotyping and its role in medicine to better understand disease was presented at the inaugural American Academy of Neurology Innovation Event in 2018. The proposed effort involved a novel approach aimed at better understanding the 3D shape, surface characteristics, and structure of brain anomalies from a variety of neurological disorders, providing more comprehensive information than currently used 2-dimensional (2D) forced perspective MRI views. This approach not only enhances our ability to educate patients and family members by presenting data that are immediately intuitive but provides remarkable advancements in our diagnostic and clinical surveillance capabilities while simultaneously improving our understanding of the biology of disease. Within the past year, additional scientific achievements have been made regarding this work. Machine and deep learning techniques have improved our platforms focused on predicting the origin of disease and future clinical state by providing structural information that was not previously discernable with the human eye. Variations of our 3D editing software have been used to evaluate surrounding brain tissue in 3D concentric rings mirroring the exact external shape of the region of interest that inform on lesion age, capacity for self-repair, and the integrity of normal-appearing surrounding brain tissue. In addition, the use of this technology has expanded to involve the study of other neurological diseases. Future efforts involving the analysis of diseases in 3D form will further revolutionize our approach to characterizing and determining the impact of therapies on disease. |
