Description: Join us for the series, "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants", highlighting five "Neuro Giants" who will take us on their personal journey in neurology and how they have contributed to the evolution of neurology. The description of this journey will start with why I decided to go into medicine and why I decided to become a neurologist and then a behavioral and cognitive neurologist. In addition to the altruistic elements of being a clinician, neurology unlike many specialties, has several important aspects that make working in this specialty very rewarding, including the ability to use divergent thinking and deductive reasoning. In addition, unlike many specialties in medicine, neurologists are able to work with patients suffering with a large variety of diseases and thus our specialty requires exploration. In regard to education, the brain is the most complicated organ in the body and it is always a challenge to teach about its functions and about how disease can impair its functions. Finally, in relation to research, there is so much that we do not understand about brain functions and diseases, and therefore being a neurologist allows us to learn about how the brain might function and the causes of dysfunction. People often ask, "At your age, why don't you retire?" I ask, "Why?" They respond, "So you can do the things you always wanted to do." I reply, "I am doing them. I see patients, teach and do research, I feel blessed."
Completion Message: The neurologists and residents who attend will, hopefully,  understand how blessed we are to be neurologists. In addition, they will learn some of the means by which, as clinicians, we can make research discoveries, advance our knowledge of neurological diseases, and let students know the joys of being a neurologist.
