C32 - The Neurology of Social Behavior
Event Time: | Saturday May 4, 2019 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm |
Topic(s): | Aging, Dementia, Cognitive, and Behavioral Neurology |
Director(s): | Bradford Dickerson MD, FAAN |
Description: | Over the past decade, we have seen remarkable advances in our knowledge of social cognitive and affective neuroscience. Our understanding of the neural circuits underpinning socioemotional behaviors such as empathy, self-awareness, warmth, and reading others' intentions is more precise than ever before. Faculty will provide an overview of how specific neural networks normally function to support social behavior, and will show how this new information can improve our ability to understand the kinds of neurologically based behavioral dysfunction that result from disease and injury. Disturbances of socioemotional behavior in clinical neurology will be discussed using data from patients with diseases that particularly impair social functions, such as frontotemporal dementia, autism, ADHD, sociopathy, and Williams syndrome. |
Completion Message: | Participants should be able to understand that social behavior and cognition rely on specific neurologic systems in the brain, have a sense of the basic organization and general neuroanatomy of social behavior, and be aware of specific neurologic conditions that particularly impair social functioning. |
