C228 - Skills Workshop: Brain Death: How to Perform a Brain Death Evaluation, Avoid Pitfalls and Convey the News to the Family

Event Time: Thursday May 9, 2019 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Topic(s): Neuro Trauma, Critical Care, and Sports Neurology, Neurohospitalist, Foundations in Clinical Neurology for APPs
Director(s): Panayiotis Varelas MD, PhD, FAAN
Description: In 2010, the AAN published straightforward guidance for the declaration of death by neurologic criteria (brain death, BD), but policies and practices continue to vary significantly across the US and worldwide, increasing the risk for false brain death declarations and erosion of the public trust on our ability to pronounce death reliably. Therefore, there is a great need for health care providers to improve practices surrounding the declaration of BD. This workshop will include three consecutive sessions: didactics including videos, simulation of BD in mannequins (or difficult cases-vignettes), and question and answer discussion regarding BD controversies and presentation of BD results to families
Completion Message: Participants will become familiar with the process of conducting a complete BD evaluation, be able to address difficult cases and avoid pitfalls, and be able to conduct a thorough and compassionate discussion with the relatives of the patient and improve their understanding of BD.
CME Credits: 4.25
Core Competencies: Patient Care, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Systems-Based Practice
