Event Time: Monday May 6, 2019 7:00 am to 9:00 am
Topic(s): Movement Disorders
Director(s): Mark Hallett MD, FAAN
Description: Functional (psychogenic) movement disorders are common problems, but they are often difficult to diagnose and treat. This program will will first consider the clinical features that help make the diagnosis on positive elements and not rely only on ruling out organic disorders. The diagnosis can often be supported by clinical neurophysiology and other laboratory testing, and the useful tests will be the second topic. The third topic will be a review of the new approaches to therapy of these patients which are markedly improving the prognosis. Treatment begins with communicating the diagnosis to the patient in a clear and compassionate manner, and then includes physical therapy, psychotherapy, and multidisciplinary treatments.
Completion Message: Participants should be able to make a positive diagnosis of functional movement disorders, and know how to organize a multidisciplinary approach to therapy.
