Description: This session is a welcome to NINDS Day. It will provide a preview of NIH Funding and NINDS opportunities by the NINDS’ Director and Deputy Director. Dr. Walter Koroshetz has been the director of NINDS since in June 2015. As the Director, he works to advance the mission of the Institute, to improve fundamental knowledge about the brain and the nervous system, and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disorders. He has held leadership roles in a number of NIH and NINDS programs including the NIH’s BRAIN Initiative, the Traumatic Brain Injury Center collaborative effort between the NIH intramural program and the Uniformed Health Services University, and the multi-year work to develop and establish the NIH Office of Emergency Care Research to coordinate NIH emergency care research and research training.Dr. Schor was named Deputy Director of NINDS in January. She joins NINDS from the University of Rochester where she served as chair of the department of pediatrics and pediatrician-in-chief at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Dr. Schor is a pediatric neurologist whose research has focused on neuroblastoma, and neuronal death caused by oxidative stress. Over her career, Dr. Schor has mentored more than 80 post-doctoral fellows and graduate, medical, and undergraduate students.
