Description: There are approximately 9 million Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or intersex (LGBTQI). Increasingly, research has shown disparities in access to care, in outcomes for particular diseases, and higher all-cause mortality for this community, prompting the NIH to recently designate this community as a health disparity population in need of further research. While the etiology of these health disparities is multifactorial, studies have suggested that provider behavior is a significant contributing factor. We will provide a brief overview of this topic and summarize the work of the AAN’s LGBTQI section to address these healthcare disparities.
