HeadTalks: Quality Improvement Registry for Epilepsy Centers

Event Time: Friday April 28, 2017 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Topic(s): Epilepsy/Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG)
Director(s): Susan Herman MD, FAAN
Description: Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy often have significant morbidity related to epilepsy, including limitations on independence, comorbid psychiatric and cognitive disorders, and increased risk of injury and death.  The care of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy accounts for the majority of both direct and indirect costs of epilepsy.  Many treatment options are available for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, including new antiseizure drugs, the vagus nerve stimulator (VNS), epilepsy surgery, the ketogenic diet, and brain stimulation.  Despite this, there is little epidemiologic data available on the natural history, diagnostic evaluation, and treatments administered to patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.  Many patients with drug-resistant epilepsy undergo evaluation in specialized epilepsy centers to identify patients who are candidates for epilepsy surgery and other advanced treatments, but there is no currently no system to assess the quality of care delivered at epilepsy centers. The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) aims to improve the quality of care delivered to epilepsy patients.  As part of its criteria for accreditation of Level 3 and Level 4 Epilepsy Centers, NAEC will develop a clinical registry for inpatient epilepsy monitoring and epilepsy surgery.  The project will include development of standardized templates, development of a registry database, and identification of initial quality indicators.  The registry will help to track trends and assess quality of inpatient video-EEG monitoring, epilepsy surgery, and other advanced treatment techniques.  The registry will support the NAEC performance improvement program for epilepsy centers.  The registry will include real-time reporting of quality metrics so Epilepsy Centers can validate the quality of care they provide, benchmark their performance on a national and practice level, and identify opportunities to close gaps in care.
