Live Well: The Mindful Practice Curriculum at the University of Rochester

Event Time: Thursday April 27, 2017 8:00 am to 8:45 am
Topic(s): General Neurology
Director(s): Frederick Marshall MD
Description: Under the leadership of Drs. Ronald Epstein and Michael Krasner, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) initiated systematic efforts to introduce mindfulness in the third-year undergraduate medical school curriculum, as well across 6 core residency specialties (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Emergency Medicine) a decade ago. The roll-out of the curriculum involved a year-long faculty development phase during which core-faculty from each department were trained in aspects of mindfulness, as well as narrative medicine and appreciative inquiry. Modules on a variety of pertinent topics, including How Doctors Think, Professionalism, Burn-Out and Resilience, Medical Errors, Being with Suffering and others were developed collaboratively. This approach to undergraduate and graduate medical education in mindfulness has been novel, and has been the topic of biannual 4 and 5-day residential retreats for medical educators from around the globe for several years now: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/family-medicine/mindful-practice.aspx
