C115 - The Burden of Epilepsy: Managing Comorbidities and Quality of Life

Event Time: Tuesday April 25, 2017 7:00 am to 9:00 am
Topic(s): Epilepsy/Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG)
Director(s): Gregory Cascino MD, FAAN
Description: This program will address the cognitive, neurologic, and psychiatric disorders associated with epilepsy, and the socio-economic consequences of the disease. The adverse effects of the therapy will also be considered. The comorbidity of epilepsy may be progressive and impair the patients' quality of life. In selected individuals these disorders may be more significant that the seizure activity. The burden of epilepsy is not well understood by many neurologists, and not addressed adequately in the evaluation and treatment of people with epilepsy.
Completion Message: Participants should become familiar with the current recommendations for the evaluation and treatment of comorbid conditions that occur in people with epilepsy including language and cognitive disorders, behavioral problems, depression, and complications of treatment. Clinical pearls to screen patients for significant mood disorders that may be associated with suicide will be provided. The risks, prevalence, and possible prevention of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP) will be presented.
