The Global Burden of Neurological Diseases

Event Time: Thursday May 1, 2014 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Topic(s): Global Health
Director(s): Jerome Chin MD, PhD, MPH, FAAN, Massimo Pandolfo MD, FAAN
Description: Neurological diseases, both non-communicable and communicable, represent a significant share of the total global burden of disease. As a result of the projected growth and aging of the world’s population in the next few decades, stroke, dementias, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease will become even greater contributors to premature mortality and disability. In low- and middle-income countries, neurological infections remain a significant contributor to the burden of disease. This scientific session will cover the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of neurological diseases in different regions of the world.
Completion Message: Participants should be able to list the leading neurological contributors to the global burden of disease, understand the importance of preventive interventions to reducing the incidence and prevalence of neurological diseases, and recognize the barriers to the effective prevention and treatment of neurological diseases in resource-limited regions of the world.
